Newest Edition of Chichewa Dictionary
After recent launch online now also available on paper
The Chichewa Dictionary of Foundation Heart for Malawi is a tool for communication in Chichewa/ Chinyanja speaking Africa. The Project, which started more than a decade ago by a Dutch researcher Dr. Steven Paas, especially targets pupils and teachers of selected schools, to who printed copies of the Dictionary are given for free.
The Project has progressed a lot of late.
In its printed version the second edition of the Dictionary was published by Foundation Heart for Malawi in July 2010. The Dictionary has more than 40,000 entries from English into Chichewa and the other way round (CE-EC). The book has 860 pages See: www.chichewadictionary.org
Moreover, from 27th May 2010 anyone surfing the internet has been able to consult the CE-EC Dictionary. This is a huge leap forward for the Chichewa Dictionary Project. After months of intensive preparations the Dictionary was put online. http://translate.chichewadictionary.org/.
Foundation Heart for Malawi offers free access to the online Dictionary to everyone, though limited to 10 searches per day and to the first lines of an entry. This enables any potential user of the online Dictionary to decide on becoming a Licence Holder with unlimited access. For unlimited access to the online Dictionary users need a personal licence code.
By paying fees, Licence Holders of the online Dictionary contribute to the printing and the distribution of the printed version of the Dictionary. The same is true for Advertisers, who are interested to to join their advertisement to the online Dictionary. See: http://www.chichewadictionary.org/how-to-contribute
Financially, the Dictionary Project mainly depends on Sponsors and Buyers. Sponsors are invited to donate to the bank account of the Project. Buyers of single copies rely on bookshops and pay retailprices.. Buyers of larger quantities can directly buy from Foundation Heart for Malawi. Then conditions are more favourable. See: http://www.chichewadictionary.org/how-to-buy-the-dictionary
Finally, Foundation Heart for Malawi encourages friends to contribute to the Dictionary Project by propagating it and recommending it to others, e.g. by forwarding the information on the online and printed versions of the Dictionary to those of one’s network who may be interested.
Your comments on the printed and online versions of the Dictionary are welcome!
